What is the Swopper?
Have you heard of the Swopper yet? If you are researching performance seating than you probably have stumbled on up, or at least seen a picture. The Swopper is a non-traditional seating solution that looks more like a pogo stick than it does a chair, but it has met with rave reviews over tha past few years.
So despite the fact that it does not look like a task chair, the Swopper is a highly regarded alternative to a traditional chair. It (generally) lacks a backrest and never has armrests, but it is a favorite among people with lower back issues.
The Swopper is basically a stool built over a single post. This post is spring-loaded and can tilt in 360 degrees. The concept behind the Swopper is what is known as "active seating", basically the same reason why some people choose to sit on large exercise (Swedish) balls instead of a chair. The thinking is that by sitting on something that is not stable you will keep your lower back active, strong, and healthy.
Because of it's instability the back is forced to excerise throughout the day which promotes muscle control, gentle exercise, and better circulation. The design should prevent slouching and while it is uncomfortable at first, it get's better over time.
The Swopper ranges from $499-$699, which is not very expensive, as task chairs go, but it expensive considering that it is generally taking the place of a $30 exercise ball. There are not many options available aside from color, but you can add a backrest or casters if you want.
So is the Swopper the chair for you? It is even a great chair? That is for you to decide. It is clear that a lot of people's backs have been helped out by the Swopper's design. If it is actually a great alternative to a standard task chair is up for debate, but it could be just what you are looking for.
